Efficacy of XP Endo Finisher R in removing calcium-silicate based sealer remnants

Objective: The aim was to compare the efficacy of additional use of XP Endo Finisher R and passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) after routine retreatment procedures in removing root canal filling material remnants subsequent to obturation with AH26, Endoseal MTA and MTA Fillapex.
Methods: 72 single-canal human mandibular premolar teeth were prepared using Mtwo rotary files. Subsequent to smear layer removal, obturation was performed by lateral compaction with gutta-percha and one of the following sealers: 1. AH26, 2. Endoseal MTA and 3. MTA Fillapex. After 1-week incubation, basic retreatment procedure was done with H File and chloroform in all groups, then specimens were divided into two subgroups according to the retreatment finishing method used: A. PUI with5.25% NaOCl for 1 min using an E7 tip, B. activation of 5.25% NaOCl for 1 min with XP Endo Finisher R (XP). Specimens were longitudinally sectioned and evaluated under stereomicroscope. The percentage of filling material remnants were calculated with Image J software. Data were analyzed by One Way ANOVA, T-Test and Turkey HSD pairwise comparison. P<0.05 was considered as statistically significant.
Results: Less remnants were seen in the XP group irrespective of the sealer type and canal third evaluated (P<0.001). In all canals thirds in the XP group and the middle third of the PUI group, significantly higher amounts of sealer remnants were seen when Endoseal MTA was used (P<0.05); while in the coronal and apical thirds of the PUI group, these amounts were significantly higher when MTA Fillapex was used (P<0.05).
Conclusion: XP Endo Finisher R was more effective in removing filling material remnants when AH26, Endoseal MTA and MTA Fillapex, were used. (EEJ-2020-06-140)
